¿IPhones nuevos para la vieja? Apple lanza programa de intercambio

iphones-models-4-thru-5

Despite being a pioneer of mobile technology, Apple is a little late to the game when it comes to helping customers trade enter those products.

According to CNBC on Friday, the Exchange program is set to launch today, 30 August.

Details are still scarce as Apple has released any details, so we will have to wait and see all day.

But before buyers can exchange their iPhones old and worn for a new device at one lower cost, or even free, there is a slight problem.

The business news channel reported that the participants of the program of an Exchange should abandon the stores with a new contract.

That is not very surprising or even irrational, but definitely something to keep in mind for customers in the middle of your subscriptions or even nearing the end.

Compared with other Exchange programs existing technology, it is not as simple as just as dropping an iPhone used in wrap bubble-lined with a prepaid shipping label and get refund via PayPal.

For example, Gazelle is currently offering up to $210 in cash by an "impeccable" uses iPhone 4S with 16GB of space from AT & T. Amazon is to distribute up to $230 in store credit line for the same model through its own Exchange program.

Apple already has a program similar to the Amazon service, offering cards gift shop for electronics, including iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and even other desktop PCs and laptops.

Of course, consumers still would have to sign another contract if you choose to buy a new iPhone through Apple, but at least there is less work involved in this scenario.

The launch of an iPhone exchange programme is also fueling the fire that Apple is clearing house for a new generation.

After months without anything from Cupertino, the anticipation and buzz for the next iPhone is reaching a boiling point.

Analysts and consumers alike could have their wishes (at least concerning a new debut) soon as reports have been circulating, pointing to a presentation on Tuesday, September 10.

Earth to Picard: Wearable tech is science fiction

picard-rikerPicard: "Number One, tell your pants to 'stand down'."
Riker: "Pants, sir?"

In the Star Trek realm, we're focused (as the audience) on military people—those who are in Star Fleet or are somehow connected to space science, exobiology, or stardust analysis. They use wearable tech. Communications devices seem to be the wearable vogue of the 24th century but not much else. Tricorders are handheld, phasers are handheld—heck, even flashlights are handheld. Wearable tech is science fiction, even 300 years into the future.

Apparently, I'm not the only one who thinks that wearable tech is, since the Great Debate on the topic of Wearable Computing reader opinion poll is split 50:50 right now. Half of you agree with me, which might be 25 percent more than those who usually agree with me.

Certainly Google Glass is an experiment in futility. No one will ever seriously wear this thing nor could one be productive with it. Wearable tech, to be useful to and adopted by the masses, will have to be unobtrusive, unobstructive, and unnoticeable. In other words, so small and so lightweight that you don't realize it's there.

I'm always aware of my cell phone in my pocket. Something that large and heavy can't be wearable. Even a bluetooth headset is too much. I've seen people use one in public and they look like monkeys—always pawing away at their ears and talking too loud. I feel like answering them when they look at me and talk but they're just staring, which is even weirder. So, I've decided to DIY a bluetooth signal scrambler so that anyone within earshot of me can't use one of those stupid things.

I'm not a great electronic or mechanical genius, so I might have to enlist the help of Tech DIY guru, David Gewirtz, for some assistance with that but I'm going to do it.

They'll never figure out what's going on with their wearable tech and I'll never tell. So, if your stupid bluetooth headset, your WiFi-connected gadget, or whatever it is you're messing with doesn't work, look around for me—I might be there, blocking you.

If only I could find a way to jam texting. That's my next goal: To jam texting. Text jamming, I reckon, is actually WiFi and Cellular signal jamming.

I HAVE A QUEST! To seek the Holy Jam. Sorry, back to the story of wearable tech.

Let's pretend for a moment that we're going to ignore Star Trek technology and think past "communications only" wearable tech. What other types of technology could designers weave into fashion? They might give us a musical brooch or eyeglasses that change color in response to mood, time of day, or UV exposure. Designers could include security strips into collars, cuffs, belts, or seams I suppose. But are there any useful wearable tech items that would be both fashion-forward and useful? Only time and geeky desires will tell for sure.

And we all know how fashion conscious computer people are, right?

I suppose too that high fashion could include concert T-shirts that play hits from its silk screened artist. Ill-fitting, non-belted pants could be made to change color when they've been worn for too many days in a row or had too much french fry grease wiped onto them. A pair of talking pants that ask for a belt or demand to be pulled up over one's "coin slot" would be a big hit.

If clothes designers were really clever, they could make their talking clothes give good fashion advice to the (How shall I phrase it?) fashion challenged. Talking shirts would say, "Tuck me in" or "I don't go with those pants."

Such wearable tech could result in more well-dressed nerds, so much so that dates and marriages would increase for an otherwise socially awkward demographic.

What would we do with all those empty basements? I know, dad could brew beer in his "man cave" or mom could have an art studio. Ah, what dreams may come.

Although realistically, the only "wearable tech" or wearable computing market, for the foreseeable future, is probably for the military. Those guys are so loaded up that they need some lightweight, unobtrusive wearable tech. As far as the common person goes, not so much. But, as in Star Trek, there's a need for handy communications devices. Other than the ability to speak with someone on demand, there's hardly any need for wearable tech now or in the future. Science fiction writers know that. Everyone else needs to wise up.

What do you think? Is wearable tech a real thing or science fiction. Talk back and let me know.

Syria-Iran cyberwar fears are a diversion from real issues

You've read it before, maybe in the New York Times (although not yesterday): The US is vulnerable to a debilitating "cyberattack". Remote enemies, from the comfort of their military bases and dorm rooms, can poison our water supplies, cripple our power grids and (gasp!) even stop us from tweeting.

With a US military action against the Syrian government possibly imminent, the usual harbingers of cyberwar are out warning the world of what awaits us when the cruise missiles strike. This Reuters analysis notes that this would be the first time the US directly attacked a country with cyberwar capability, although this is a reference to the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA), responsible for yesterday's DNS misdirection attacks against Twitter and the New York Times. The SEA may profess loyalty to the Baath regime in Syria, but we don't know who they really are. They could be a bunch of smart-ass kids anywhere trying to sound as obnoxious as possible. (There have been some reasonable efforts to trace the actual identities of the SEA, but none of them are conclusive.) Honestly, with the troubles they have these days, I'd be surprised of the Syrian government puts meaningful funds into cyberwarfare research, but perhaps I overestimate their rationality.

Reuters also alludes to help Syria might get in such attacks from their ally Iran, and this is certainly more reasonable.

"It's likely that the Syrian Electronic Army does something in response, perhaps with some assistance from Iranian-related groups," said former White House cybersecurity and counter terror advisor Richard Clarke.

You need years of government experience at the highest levels to come up with insight like that.

Former U.S. National Security Agency director Michael Hayden told Reuters that the SEA "sounds like an Iranian proxy," but the article also notes that there's no evidence that the group has the sort of capabilities that are the subject of real cyberwarfare talk: crashing major banks and ISPs, causing outages and damage to public utilities, disabling basic governmental functions and so on. The SEA is best known for hacking an AP Twitter feed; impressive as these things go, but not exactly World War III.

It's reasonable to assume that the Iranians are capable of much more. It's even more reasonable, as Reuters notes, that the Russians have not only high-level capabilities in cyberwar, but the most real-world experience in hot conflicts, owing to their work in Estonia and (to a much lesser extent) Georgia.

There are many, many good reasons for us not to attack Syria. This isn't one of them. Personally, I think that since we've waited this long we've lost the opportunity for any attack we make to have a constructive effect; the only thing we could show at this point is that we're willing to follow through on our insincere threats even when it's not in our interests to do so.

But as for the threat of cyberwar, if it's not the attack on Syria then another perfectly good pretext for Syrian/Iranian/Russian proxies to attack us is just months away. Either we retreat into isolationism or we're going to piss off someone out there, and if we're going to oppose anyone I'd say that the Iranian and Syrian governments seem worth opposing.

Case study: Sprout Social opt for IaaS from day one to support the growth of demand

SproutSocialLogo

Sprout Social offers a platform of management and participation social media for social enterprises. The putting into operation with headquarters in Chicago, IL wanted to focus on developing and refining its product, the founders was with infrastructure as a service (IaaS) of 1 day. The decision freed the company of a large part of the IT planning and predictions that consume resources in traditional environments.

To IaaS day 1

SproutSocial_AaronRankin_083013

Aaron Rankin, co-founder and director of Sprout Social, explains why the company chose IaaS.  "From the beginning we had a startup recruitment. When you pay your own money, you don't want to have to spend more than you have to. We did it for the type of flexibility that it offers. Day 1 we didn't want to predict exactly what our needs would be 1 day or even a month. If you don't have to plan something, then it is not to have to do and is happy to meet demand - that is what gave us the infrastructure as a service offering. Basically we are all in demand." Another reason cited for choosing IaaS as a solution: HP regarding how much you pay.

Technological solutions

Sprout Social started with cloud (formerly Mosso) sites. According to Rankin, "back then 3-4 years, there was nothing with the amount of scale for the cost and turn-key as it is. So it is something like plenty of room in a box, and you don't have to worry about setting up all components."

From the outset increase exceeded Social Sprout systems scalability, to move databases in large dedicated systems was the fastest solution available. The Social platform sprout now relies on a flexible infrastructure hybrid of Rackspace. The infrastructure includes:

Hybrid files hostingDedicated serversRackConnectPublic cloudCloud block storageCloud backupCloud

Because the Sprout Social platform processes and stores large amounts of heterogeneous data at different frequencies. By design, the system keeps similar details together, making it easy and cost-effective to deal with complex storage and performance requirements.

RackspaceServers_SproutSocialCase_083013

"In our company, we have two engineers who manage all of our servers," said Rankin. "It turns out that they are former employees of Rackspace. We have an account manager at Rackspace, a technical leader and some other people who are dedicated to our account. If we have a serious problem, beam took absolute hours. Call Conference very early in the morning when the hardware has failed and that sort of thing".

Best growth through IaaS

Rankin talks about the company is a little early days, "so, as a technology startup, we don't think much about infrastructure. We focus on the product and the people to use it all. As it is typical, we knew that we had passed the hardware that we were staying because the site was constantly slow."

Adds, "it was clear from our own use of the site and the follow-up that we had reports from users who we needed to grow our infrastructure. "Back then, weren't very calculated respect - only crept upon us". Sprout Social now has more formal control of sites and processes mechanisms in place.

Vs cost-saving opportunities

"We have not done anything to draw our operational savings, but that is something that I'm beginning to think now, especially in the last year," said Rankin. "Our growth has been great, and our accounts have remained with that. For the moment, we are beginning to look at Rackspace private cloud offering, because it would give us much more control. "It should really help us cut our Bill enough."

Rackspace_Cloud_Company_Logo_clr_600x218[1]

Adds: "the logic behind us using [IaaS] was not saving directly. If we know exactly what needed and bought it and attempted to hardware ourselves and made a capital expenditure or even leased from Rackspace, we could probably save money, but we're in this because we want to change things on demand. A team of developers of my morning you can tell me that we need ten machines for something with cloud servers that you can literally rent. We can do so immediately. There are no deadlines or procurement process. Just turn them, and are ready to go. There are, of course, the value for the business. It's more than the creation of opportunities for cost savings."

Lessons learned

Rankin and his team have learned many lessons from IaaS to go first. It begins with "the cloud is not perfect. "People love to make cloud as always if the thundercloud."

Rankin continues, "unless you are actually using running on all the physical machine and how much it takes to do it, because it is not transparent, then you have neighbors." Don't know who they are their neighbors and do not know you. Things could be misbehaving. When that happens, it will affect."

"Should always build their systems to be tolerant even more, even more resistant, even more if it would have full competence of [it] was their situation of hardware and systems are running along with other systems." "We have bitten the cloud so many times, but we have only built for it, and we have taken some technologies that were built technologies that expect hardware to fail or obtaining and explanation on the fly".

"The cloud is not a silver bullet," Rankin recalled.

Conclusion

Rackspace cloud platform hybrid allows Sprout Social to focus on product development and its core business, allowing implementation underway expand its infrastructure to meet the demands of its growing customer base.

Internet connections are now commonplace in the home and in the workplace now. The communication is often sent over the Internet and also as a resource for finding information. People are constantly looking for ways to improve the speed and reliability of their Internet connection, a T1 line can accomplish this task.

Regular Internet connection over a copper wire, transfer the data together it is presented, connect the cable to a central server, which then connected to the Internet via a well-connected fiber optic cable. The Internet is slowed as it enters the copper cable, by changing the speed of the copper wire with optical fiber connector

T1 connections use an optical cable to the internet in one place instead of copper cable to connect. The bandwidth is greatly increased, whereby the speed and the Internet. A regular broadband connection as data send over five hundred twelve kilobits per second symmetrical send and receive data at a rate of about 1.54 Mbps a T1 connection.

Many of users who may, on the web at the same time is a bottleneck in a regular route. One advantage of a T1 connection is that, because the bandwidth is increased more users to the Internet from a single location without having to access a bottleneck. This means a more stable connection in the world, using the connection.

Normally, a call is sent over the copper wire, and then scanned on the telephony server, this may lead to poor quality phone calls. With a T1 connection, but calls are digitized at the source and the quality of the connection is usually much higher. Multiple calls can a T1 than once, saving the need for multiple lines must be connected to a building.

A T1 line offers a much more stable and faster than a standard Internet connection copper. Many users are able to use the Internet simultaneously without slowing down, so that the company's productivity can be increased. Web pages load quickly and the call quality will be higher and the use of this type of line.
