For decades, Microsoft was a software company. Now, with the purchase of the division of Nokia phone, Microsoft has officially changed to be a reputable company hardware also.
We've seen a while ago. Heck, most of the people in America already thought that Nokia was a Microsoft company.
After all, Nokia was headed by a former Executive of Microsoft, Stephen Elop. Under the direction of Elop Nokia became the number one Windows phone provider. There are other vendors of Windows Phone, but none was so tied to the hip of Microsoft like Nokia.
I believe that this movement has been in the works for some time. Even as Nokia continued its rapid decline - their shares lost 85 percent of its value under the rule of Elop - Elop remained faithful to their Covenant of Microsoft. In fact, as part of this agreement, Elop returned to Microsoft, and some see Elop as the heir to CEO Steve Ballmer.
Do not ask me how someone who could lead a company on Earth Elop form can even be retained in any position of authority no matter to be considered as a CEO of a major company, but there it is.
It has been suggested that Microsoft bought Nokia because they had before that company was scuttled. In fact, some even think that Nokia forced Microsoft by blackmailing them with the threat that the company already would not make Windows phones.
I don't believe in these ideas. If you looked carefully, was seen moving Microsoft hardware as soon as 2011. I see the acquisition of Nokia as the natural next step in the progression of Microsoft's software for hardware and cloud services company.
Of course, Microsoft has been dabbling with hardware for years with some success, in peripherals such as keyboards and mice; and some failures, such as the family and the Zune. What is happening now is different.
Firstly, with the Tablet's surface and now with Nokia deal, Microsoft has made it clear that it wants to be your provider of hardware, as well as their source of software number one. A brand Microsoft PC or laptop can very far? I would not bet against it.
The question is how much the real question is not whether Microsoft will invest in hardware sales. There is no doubt that bets its future hardware store.
The immediate question: how is this movement will affect your bottom line and your business partners? With regard to the first, the line of surface or Windows Phone from Nokia has done well in the market. Microsoft has a long way to go in the tablets and smartphones before can really contend against allies Android Apple and Google.
Regarding relationships, I think that Microsoft continues to burn its bridges with its hardware partners. I think that this is a very dangerous course of action.
That said, also may have been unique opportunity Microsoft to compete in the world post-PC.
While Microsoft still does not have the desktop, has little significant presence in tablets and Smartphones and its partners did not help anything. I can see brains of Microsoft decides to return in 2011 that its only real hope to remain a presence in personal computing in the 2020s should take your target hardware into their own hands.
