"Father of the iPod" sets his sights on the venerable smoke detector

Summary: After having conquered the home thermostat, former Apple employee (and member of the original team of iPod) Tony Fadell launches detector nest protection, smoke and carbon monoxide for the iPhone generation.

Co-founder of nest Tony Fadell is widely regarded as the "father of the iPod" having overseen 18 generations of the omnipresent device during their mandate of Apple. It also has the distinction of being one of the few executives of Apple to Apple to another company.

As an owner of the first product of the nest, nest of learning thermostat (which I have reviewed in may 2012) was excited to receive e-mail about the company's second product, a smoke and a so-called carbon monoxide detector nest protect:

"It is time for the next big idea of nest. And we want to be the first to know. We have reinvented the smoke alarm. Instead of screaming you to burn the toast, to protect the nest gives a friendly notice. You can even silence false alarms with a gesture of his hand instead of a towel. And in an emergency, it tells you what is the threat and where is. Also protects nest can be in contact with your smartphone. You'll get a message when the battery is empty so it can replace them and avoid the dreaded low battery chirp at midnight."

Naturally, there is a demo video:

Protect, just like its cousin thermostat, is the smoke detector. Its aim is to solve all the problems with traditional home smoke detector.

Burn the toast? No problem. "Before starting a loud alarm, aullida, protect the nest gives you an early warning that we call heads-up." Nest Protect yellow lights and speak with a human voice." You ever wave a newspaper to silence your smoke detector? "If there is a nuisance alarm, only they stand under the nest protect and alert on the Calla arm wave." do I hate that annoying beep? In addition to an alarm sound, nest protect speaking with a human voice. My kids will love this, because they are young and our current detector humo-ferreteria scares them when it rings. It is also a detector of carbon monoxide, which are now required by law in 39 States of United States. In fact, if you leave the nest carbon monoxide alarm protect, their nest thermostat automatically turns off your oven gas as a safety measure. (Gas ovens are a potential source of carbon monoxide leakage).

And, of course, it works with the iPhone and the iPad:

Nest Protect is available for pre-order for $129 in black or white and whether cable (120-Volt) or battery.

Some people will have trouble justifying to protect the nest, especially when monoxide and smoke detectors smart is bundled with several security installations in the home. My colleague from ZDNet Jason Perlow says that many home security providers are also in the business of smart thermostat also.

My nest protect seems a home run because it does not come with a monthly bill. Stay tuned for full review on these pages soon and post your thoughts in the "talkback" below.
